Chup: Bucky Balls

Hey, hi.  Chup here with the post-holiday wish-list report.

While I wasn't exactly holding my breath thinking Santa would drop off my STi this year, I was definitely hoping for some of the other -less spendy- things on my list.

Hello, BuckyBalls.

I've been a bit of a magnet nerd for...well a long time.  Nerdy like scouring Chinese websites for cheap magnets.

And I was happy with my humble magnet collection.  Discs, cubes, rectangles and spheres.  Large and small.  Ceramic.  Ferrite.  Neodymium.  And Rare earth, Oh Yeah!

What little I do know about magnets makes me appreciate Buckyballs:  they're super strong, and the coating doesn't chip.  Most every other source I've tried fails in one or both categories.

Funny:  my parents bought me a set for Christmas.

And then my brother and I didn't put them down for 3 days.

Then my dad felt bad and bought my brother his own set.

Then I felt bad and bought my dad his own set.

Merry Christmas, Buckyballs.

What do you do with them?

Duh.

Dunno really what else I can say about Buckyballs other than: buy some.

Most places (like their site) are around $30.  Occasionally woot.com has a two-fer for $30 plus $5 shipping.

There are some other names out there: Neocube and Zen Magnets.   Haven't tried either of these (yet!) But Zen makes some pretty convincing arguments.  Funny.  If you're nerd.

Oh yeah, evidently they can mess up your intestines.

Gratuitous macro fun:

I'm Chup and I'm made of non-ferrous material.

they sound awesome! My hubby is a magnet affiliate and buys new ones all the time.
Ehm, I don't want to force this on you,but I think you'll really like the German site http://www.supermagnete.de.
They claim to have the strongest magnets in the world. We bought their tiniest ones (Diameter 1,5 mm) and they really are super strong!
My, that sounds more and more like advertisement, but believe me: I'm not getting paid to write this. I wish!

That first line had me in hysterics... did you know that STI in the UK is the abbreviation for sexually transmitted infection? I'm glad Santa didn't get you that for Christmas! My children love playing with Geomag in our house, the Bucky Balls look great!

I missed this the first time around. What a great idea. My husband is SO hard to buy for. I can see my 15-year old son loving them too. Thanks, Chup!

My dad got some of these for me and my husband for Christmas. We have had so much fun with them--they were the most fought-over and most-played with present in the house, bar none.

I bought 3 sets after reading about them here - they were definitely a hit with each of the men who received them. Now I want my own set, or I wish my husband hadn't taken his to work.

Lisa - Will be checking out that site. Soon.

Naomi - Oh. Awesome. STD in the states. D for disease. Yikes.

Itzel - Awesome! Tell him not to swallow any.

Anon- thinkgeek is the only place my brother and my dad and I buy each other's christmas/birthday gifts.

deemom - My 'rents got mine from the website, and then we found them in Fred Meyer of all places. On the checkstands in Apparel of all places. Cool thing was that everything in Apparel was 25% off that day. Woot!

last year for Christmas, i gave little bottles of hand sanitizer from bath and body works to my coworkers. a few days later, my boss, kind conservative man that he is, came over to my desk to thank me for the hand sanitizer. he also held in his hand his new new bucky balls, and he mentioned to me how much he appreciated my gift, "because I use it on my balls", he said.

i've never been so mortified. and it was more mortifying to watch him desperately try to backpedal out of what was intended to be a compliment. "see, they smell good.....er, I mean....uh.....it makes them less germy......uh.....i mean, because people touch them"........

I could be entertained for HOURS!

But what exactly do they do to your intestines? Mine are messed up already. Maybe they could fix'em!

Sounds fun...just keep them away from your computer or it will erase the memory. :(

I got them for Scott and well, just like you three days of bucky balls, here, there, everywhere! And if one went missing, we were all on the floor trying to find it! Yes, he has the sTi on his "wish" list too, some day...
Thanks for the great gift ideas!

Hmmm... I watched the video, looked at the photos and don't get it. Maybe it's a guy thing. :)

I bought 4 sets for Chritmas gifts, for my husband and sons. They love them, only proplem is the coating is chipping off the set I gave my husband. I've sent two emails to Budky Balls customer service and can't get them to respond.

We love magnets at our house too! THis post made me laugh though because my sister got some to her {unbelievably responsible} 8 year old and he had a hard time getting past the, "Do not let your kids play with these. For grown-ups only!" labels on the package.

Plus I just like to say bucky balls.

magnets are harmful if you swallow more than one. They can "get together" in your intestines.

Lisa said...

Great, Mr. Chup, do that. And let me know if you like it!

I bought these for my husband and 17 year old son and in addition to being addicting and fun (even for us non-nerds) it gave plenty of opportunity for nearly inappropriate conversation about "dad's balls". Hilarity ensued! I can't recommend them enough!

Anonymous said...

My husband got some months ago thinking they would be great for our naturally-nerdy son. Some kids have to work at it - not mine! And after promptly losing about 10 of them in the car, hubby repossessed them and gave them to me. Oh dear they are addictive.

They look like they would be great fun but for those of you with small children please take extra care to make sure that all the pieces are accounted for at all times.
