While you are there I am giving very specific and highly classified instructions on how you can enter to win your own Kenmore Elite fridge (or other major appliances) and a Kenmore Elite mixer. Generous huh? Thanks Kenmore and BlogHer!

Straight From the Horse's Mouth

Troy Holmberg is married to my cousin Lisa.  So, we're mostly family.  He's heavily involved in humanitarian efforts in Africa, and he's founder of Coast Coconut Farms and Basa Body.  I wanted him to say few words about the history, people and the cause behind these companies and their products.

Basa is a different kind of company because we didn’t start it with a profit motive or any preconceived ideas.

We started it simply as a way to empower the people in Kenya whom we have come to love and admire, to find a way to educate their children and get clean water and better housing so they could improve their lives and bring them hope.

We had been working in rural Kenya for 10 years, starting with microcredit (providing small loans to the rural women so they could start and grow income-generating activities such as raising chickens, raising tomatoes, harvesting coconuts or mangos, sewing etc.).  We saw that the best way we could help was not to give a hand-out to someone (which takes away dignity and creates dependency) but to give a hand-up, by giving these resourceful and hard-working women the tools they lacked to improve their own lives.

Providing loans was a great start.

Our effort, now called Yehu Microfinance, helps over 17,000 rural women in Kenya (see www.yehu.org).  But we soon learned that microcredit is not enough.  We wanted to really create meaningful jobs in Kenya that could bring self-reliance and build income for the very poorest at the bottom of the economic pyramid in Kenya.

We helped a group of women learn to make virgin coconut oil. The project, called Coast Coconut Farms (www.coastcoconutfarms.co.ke) employs about 30 women plus about 100 farmers who harvest the coconuts and bring them to the factory to be made into oil.  We quickly realized that they needed help selling their oil to expand and become sustainable.

We knew that if we could find a way to tell their story that people here in the US would respond.

We set out to create natural skin-care products that could utilize the fabulous organic coconut oil, with all its health properties.  Thus Basa was born, named for the women of Mombasa, Kenya, where Coast Coconut Farms is located.  We have since decided that Basa can also contribute a significant amount of its profits to go back to projects designed to create jobs and self-reliance in Kenya.

That is why we say “When you nourish your skin naturally, beautiful things happen”.

We are a small company with a cause.  Get involved and help us spread the love.  You can purchase products, tell friends and family, even join our Woman2Woman affiliate program and create an income stream for yourself while doing good.  It is easy.  We need your help to really make a difference.   Visit our website www.basabody.com to learn more, purchase products or join our Woman2Woman affiliate program.  Asante Sana (Thank you in Swahili)!

Troy
Founder, Basa

P.S. Basa Body: Three Gigantic Things

ONE -
I believe in women helping women AND you know I love Basa’s awesome natural products.  AND the whole idea of helping women in Kenya pull themselves out of poverty simply by purchasing their stuff is a great concept.

With Basa Body, I am proud to announce that there is another way we can help.  Basa has just unveiled their new Women2Women affiliate opportunity, designed to help women become self-reliant all around the world.

Basa's Women2Women is your way to earn extra income while spreading the word about wonderful natural products, in turn helping create more jobs for rural women in Kenya.  Basa provides you with everything you need to advertise, promote and inform others.   Whenever someone clicks through to Basa from your site/email/FB etc. and a sale results, Basa’s software tracks it and you will be paid a generous monthly commission.  Do well for yourself while doing good.

Some points that need to be made:

1.  Basa Body is notnotnot an MLM. Check www.basabody.com for a little history and how the company came to be.  Trade Not Aid, baby.
2.  While Basa is a for-profit company, %25 of that profit goes to humanitarian efforts in Africa.  Micro-loan projects, water projects, class room projects etc.

So, simple.  Check out the Women2Women affiliate program here, and let's do our bit to change the world.

TWO-

How do you know if you want to invest your time and considerable talents in Basa Women2Women affiliate program?  Try every single one of their products, that's how.  I'm giving away a package of one of everything Basa makes.  Here's how to enter (up to three times!)

November Motherlode:
I'll be giving away a Basa Body facial kit in this months Motherlode.  Bet your sweet pink boots it's awesome:

Specifics here.  Stay tuned for more info on the Motherlode.

THREE-
I talked a few weeks ago about my cousin Troy and Basa Body taking me to Africa.  Provided I'm not pregnant, of course.  I also hinted that one of you could go along with me.  The all-expense paid trip to Kenya will be closely tied to the affiliate program.  There will also be an exciting opportunity to get to Kenya in...other ways.  Details are coming, but let's just say that we'll be impressed with anyone who can use their skills - creative or otherwise - to help us spread the Basa Body word.

Kash for Kami

Kami is the same age as my Chief. Two.

I don't know Kami personally, or her family, but I know that two months ago her parents found a lump in her tummy. Turns out, that lump was cancer--a rare cancer on her liver. I can't look at her blog or read her stories without thinking of my own two year old. So when I was asked to help donate to an auction in her honor, I very quickly said yes.

My friends and I put together a "c jane and friends" package with all sorts of cool stuff from cool people and includes one of my books. You can go here and bid on the package if you love it (and I think you will) or browse for other items here. The Pioneer Woman herself has a few signed cookbooks to auction here.

All proceeds go to Kami's family to help with medical expenses.

(Thanks to the bidders so far!)

Good luck to Kami and her family. My two year old and I will be sending out our very best wishes.

I am Courtney Kendrick and Kami is cute and cancer is stupid.

I Am So Happy I Could Pie

Last year, in a humble (yet, well decorated) apartment in Harlem Chup and I had the very best Thanksgiving pumpkin pie our taste buds had ever sampled. It was, shall I say it? yes I shall: perfection.

This pie was made by my friend (and now relative) Kimberly Calder Simmons--a new wife and celebrated pie maker. This year Kimberly has promised on her pie blog Pie Love You to bake 52 unique, gourmet and gorgeous pies and she's on number 40. With all the pie making about to resume in a couple weeks, you will need this blog as a reference.

So please, sniff your way to this blog and let me wish you the happiest of baking.

I am Courtney Kendrick and if you don't succeed, pie, pie again.

Basa Body: Trade Not Aid

I was exploring Basa Body's new website (shiny! new!) this evening when I started reading more about their Trade Not Aid policy.

Basa is committed to helping the women of Kenya become self-sufficient and build wealth--instead of handouts, they create jobs that sustain:
Basa’s core mission is to satisfy consumers who desire natural skin-care products made with organic ingredients that do not harm the environment. It was created as a social for-profit company designed to generate revenue to help create economic opportunities and wealth for Kenyan women at the base of the economic pyramid so they can pull themselves out of poverty for good.

Don't you love that?

In other news, Basa is now selling the facial kit I've been using for the past month. Using, and loving. Don't I look younger . . . I mean, if you could see me? Ok, next time I will write about the facial kit and perhaps post my proof of the wonders it is doing to my face.

Check out the new Basa Body website!

Sigur Rós--Glósóli

In a late night conversation on Friday night, my friends were singing (in a minimalist, post-rock sort of way) the praises of  Sigur Rós--a brilliant band from Iceland. This morning one of them had placed a link on my email doorstep. It has to be shared. The music and images will transform you. The ending is worth waiting for (an your children will like it too):
