Good? Sweet.
Here’s what I’m thinking for a schedule:
Monday - My Watch
Tuesday – My Flashlight(s)
Wednesday – Questions
Thursday – My Pocket Knife
Friday – Photography
Lemme know if you’d like your time spent otherwise. Otherwise, that’s the plan.

This, is my watch. It is a Casio G-shock MTG-900. It’s almost perfect. Hyperbole? Read on.
Like a lot of guys, I’m a gear-head. I like stuff. I like to research, discuss, try, return, adjust or trade to try to obtain…the best stuff. Love good design, LOVE function, ratta-tat-tat.
This watch kills it.
Here’s my lists:
Pro
- Solar powered – fuhgeddaboudit. I’ve never wound it, set it, or replaced the battery. 5 minutes of light a day keeps it charged. Yeah.
- Atomic synced – ditto. Syncronizes with the Atomic clock in Denver every night. Who’s a “who’s watch is most accurate” snob? ME!
- G-shock – Tough!
- Mineral Crystal face - Tough!
- Stainless steel – Wear it to the beach. Then to church. Tough! Mines silver, but they also make it in black. Sessy.
- Sweet tilt-sensor night light. Just rotate your wrist and voila! the night light comes on. AWESOME for impressing/annoying people in movie theaters. More on this in a sec. Both a pro and a con.
- World time – VERY easy (two buttons, up or down) to set your watch for different time zones. Brilliant for travel.
Con
- Sweet tilt sensor night light. This does kill your “charge” It’ll take a week or so to do it, and without regular exposure to light, my watch died. If you run the battery down completely, it takes an hour of direct sunlight to function properly. You CAN turn this feature off, and then the night light is just a regular button-press away. HOWEVER, I seem to have done irreparable damage to either the battery or the light itself, because my light is dead. No tilty, no button pressy. No nothin’. BUGS. It’s been this way for 4 years, and I’m used to it now. I’ve asked at several watch/jewelry shops, and none of them have been able to replace the battery. Apparently a send-it-back-to-the-factory type of deal. Deal killer for me? No. Other than the light the watch performs exactly as it did when new. Bummer? Yeah.
- Plastic – There are several plastic pieces integrated into the stainless steel design of the watch. The dark plastic is bomber. The lighter plastic that joins the band and the watch body is…less so. It’s painted or coated to simulate the stainless of the band, and the coating lasts about a week. I’m hard on stuff, but c’mon. Also, perhaps because of my acidic perspiration, the plastic has started to crack on the inside of the band. Your mom can't see it, and it’s still structurally sound but…c’mon.
- It has alarms and a stopwatch, fine. Also has this funky time recorder mode that I never use. Lets you record the starts and stops of…events. Whoopitty doo.
I could go on.
And…I will. My dad gave me this watch. Ah, the sentiment. Bought himself one of the same when he gave it to me. 5 Christmases ago, I think. I like watches, I have a bunch, and while I sometimes yearn for a 44mm Panerai, this is the one that stays on my wrist. Brilliantly dependable and accurate, respectably stylish. Everyman's. Love it. It’s one of my stuffs that I would not want to do without, and I recommend it to anyone who’ll listen.
Here’s a link for more technical details, variants on the model, color, other reviews etc. As usual, a little digging will yield better prices. Retail seems to be around $100 at Target, Walmart etc., but I think they can be had for around $75.

So that’s it. My first review. Whatcha think? More detail? Less? More irony? Requests? We got a week here, let's make good use. - ck

my husband is a surfer and I've been wanting to get him a watch that shows tides and is water proof. I have no idea where to even start researching. any suggestions?
Awesome first post Chup!! Very informative.Look forward to the others....oh..so no baby yet??
Love the review. Great amount of information. Not too much, but not too little. I've been needing to get a nice gift for my hubs (birthday AND anniversary in the next few weeks), and this is perfect. Can't wait for the rest of the reviews this week.
W has this watch. He wholeheartedly agrees. It has lasted longer than his last wedding ring.
That was fun!
Awesome review! I'm thinking my 16 yr old might like one.
I'm looking forward to tomorrows flashlight post. I want the perfect one for my emergency kit!! The rest of the week looks great too.
Thanks Chup! I found a women's version called a baby-g. http://www.casio.com/products/timepiece/baby-g/
Dear Chupa,
At our house we believe that if you are going to have a Casio it must be the CA53W-1 model (that is, THE CALCULATOR WATCH). That is because my husband is a nerd. Also you can spell BOOBS on it. Who doesn't love that?
P.S. I will forever remember to put Tabasco on my pepperoni pizza thanks to you.
I'm sorry, it auto-syncs to the atomic clock? I want one.
Love the man list of items to review. I'm sitting here thinking, 'Aren't flashlights just flashlights?' Can't wait to be educated.
My husband loves G-shock watches. In fact he bought me a baby G-Shock. Love it. He had to talk me into it, and let me pick it out. But it is great. We travel a lot, and it is so easy to find the time of any place. Plus running around with kids it never breaks.
This is a fabulous idea! My h-band is hard to buy for so I am really looking fwd to your week on this blog!
How is that gorgeous wife of yours?
I want to add that this watch is very sexy on my husband's wrist.
It does something for me too.
(wink, wink)
Today is my 19th wedding anniversary - husband is not getting a new watch, but it would be a great day for a baby! Hope this awesome watch is timing contractions . . .
Like the schedule--am particularly excited about flashlights and photography. On the photo front: we just got our first SLR and a flip video camera (baby no. 1 to arrive any day--today please...) and my husband has been experimenting with all the features. Any tips/ideas for accessories and/or how to store/organize the multitude of photos I am certain we'll soon amass with our newborn muse?
GREAT review. I will sound like a total geek saying this--but sometimes, just for fun, my husband and I like to read reviews about whatever-it-is that we're shopping for at the time. Reviews can be comical, insightful and can make or break whether we buy something.
Anyway, he has a watch he adores too--it's a Breitling Navitimer and although it was a bit pricey, it has been the best watch he's ever owned. Ever.
I'll have to pass this review on to him so he can check out your watch too.
I wonder if my husband would actually wear a cool watch like this?
Fun review! Keep up the good work. And thanks for the gift idea...Father's day is just around the corner.....
I would like to request a post on engines. I dont hear nearly enough about those at home.
I'd like some talk about a camera. I'm in the market for one and I need Advice.
*chants* MORE IRONY! MORE IRONY!! (that chant doesn't sound all that chant-y, tho Do you do: MORE I-RON-Y, or MOREIRONY? QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS...)
Lovin' Man Week already!
I LIKE Chup and his fancy watch! Do they sell it at REI?
This was awesome - but I confess I can't wait for Friday and the photo post! I've been itching to know what equipment you use and whether you are really going to make the move to Canon like cjane hinted at (COME ON IN CHUP! THE CANON WATER IS JUST FINE!)
love it! a perfect blend of all elements. and now my husband will get a watch for father's day... :)
my question for wednesday...what is your favorite bit about pregnancy?
I'm excited about flashlights and the pocketknife. Can't wait to hear about them.
My husband had to give up his auto sych watch cause it didn't sych in Alaska. boo.
I love that you made a list. Now, for the questions: how do I get my husband to be more like you? (kidding...maybe...). And what do you use to organize your digital photography? iPhoto? Picasa? Just lame-o folders? You must have thousands of pictures, and you seem like a guy who would have a systems for his precious images. I'd love to know!
question - do you know if it fits larger wrists? My hubby has a hard time finding watches because most mens watches don't fit his wrists.
i love me some irony.
Been married 10.5 years, gone thru 10.5 watches. Maybe I gotta get him one of those. Hopefully it will keep good time when it's time to time!
my husband wants this watch. he loves casio (he actually sported a calculator watch for a long time) and we recently got another casio that was about half the price of the g-shock. with a review like this i might just spring for the g-shock next time i need a really great gift.
i love seeing how well you and cjane must get along, simply for the compatibility in writing style. and the watch sounds supercool, too!
You lost me at G-shock, super duper manly metal thingy for my arm that is bulky and gadgety.
Actually, that was a good first of the week post, and I think it was an amazing display of the difference between the sexes. Since it is man week, I will have to have mine read your post...maybe he can interpret.
looking forward to pocket knife and photog days:)
Sorry, but I haven't a clue what you just said. booooorrrring. but, I'm sure my husband would be interested.
Two thumbs up! Excellent info. Excellent post.
I'm glad I heard your voice in my head when I read "ABSOLUTELY!"
{sigh}
"Let's you record starts and stops of..." Contractions!
I had a phone with that feature when I had my first baby it was awesome.
Dear chup,
i have owned a baby -g for going on 10 years now! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! They are amazing. My father in law has a less version and since he is not cell phone savvy he programmed all his phone numbers in his! Great call
I own a Casio G-shock and it sure does perfect job. I always wear it anywhere and they're pretty fashionable too.
