. . . oreo cookie recipe nie keeps blogging about?

when my sister stephanie
was a young woman
her church youth leader
made her a batch of
"homemade oreo cookies"
and they were a revelation.

i was not living at home
when the oreo cookies
made their way into my sister's heart
but she sent me the recipe in an email
so that i too could partake.

as you can see
(above)
i still have the original email
(sent in 1998)

if baked softly, they are everything
my sister claimed them to be
soft, creamy, sweet with a
bite of tea time.

though do they taste like actual
"homemade oreo cookies"?
i sometimes wonder.

i'd almost say they were better.

oreo cookies
(a la julie)

1 package of devil's food cake mix
2 eggs
3/4 cup of shortening

blend all together at once.

roll soft dough in small balls
on a cookie sheet.
(don't press down,
keep balls intact before baking)

bake at 350 degrees
for 8 minutes
(don't you dare over-bake)

frosting for the middle:
8 oz. cream cheese
1/2 stick of butter
2 tsp. vanilla
2 to 4 c. powdered sugar
mix until smooth.

when cookies are cool:
frost backs of cookies
and make sandwich with another cookie.

easy does it.

I've made these before and I'd definately say that they easily surpass regular oreos in taste. :D

I made homemade oreo's on Saturday. I just hid the last two from my children so I can down them today. I am so glad you posted the recipe...mine calls for 1 1/2 cups shortening. I so glad to know I can cut the fat down by half. THANK YOU! Or should I say that my cardiovascular system thanks you...

I've been wondering about these! Every time she mentions them my mouth starts to water. Well, there goes the diet...

These are a favorite at our house too. Try freezing them, we think they taste even better frozen. Or maybe I just don't eat as many that way?

This are an absolute favorite at our house! My kids love it when we color the frosting. You can also do this with any cake mix. My husband loves it when we use a spice cake mix. Very yummy!

For the PP's: 1/2 square of butter means half a stick.

those darn Utarns use these old pioneer terms in their recipes sometimes ;)

as I am an non-Utah mormon, I feel I can take the liberty to translate, having seen my fair share of pioneer-ish recipes and asked the same question :)

If I wasn't on a quest to lose like 15lbs, I would SOOO make these, like, today.
As it stands, I will file the recipe for the next time I fall off the wagon.

LOVE the blog, cjane! LOVE LOVE LOVE you!

Any ideas what to do if there is no devil's food cake mix around? I live in Germany and there's just no chance you'd find this (or any other cake mix) and I'd LOVE to make those.

We bake these all the time and change the color of the frosting depending on the occasion. Orange for Halloween, pink for Easter, etc. I also love to roll the edges in coordinating sprinkles. You can never go wrong with these but they do dry out quick so don't let them sit around for days.

Thanks for the recipe! Do the cookies flatten out on their own? I've tried other cake mix cookies and they just stayed in little balls...

I am admittedly the type of person who feels most validated when people love my food.

These bad boys are going to earn me gobs of praise at the next get-together.

I feel validated already!

Oh my, I am salivating at the thought of these. Thank you for sharing!!

Thanks you for the post I have wanted to try these for some time now.

The recipe I have calls for 2 pkg of cake mix, 2 eggs and 1 cup (2 sticks of butter). And about half the cream cheese in the frosting.

Now I don't know which ones to try.

These are even better with cream cheese icing in the middle. YUM!
And if you adore mint oreos, just add peppermint to the icing.

these sound really lovely although the 3/4 cup of shortening kind of freaks me out. I wonder if I could substitute with something else?

Why, oh why did you post this while I am fasting from chocolate and sweets?

Easter will be especially delicious this year.

For Anonymous in Germany - I made a recipe over the weekend with cocoa and flour instead of the cake mix. It was really good.

This is going to be a long comment, but here goes:

For the chocolate wafers:
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened Dutch process cocoa or regular
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 to 1 1/2 cups sugar [see recipe note]
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) room-temperature, unsalted butter
1 large egg

(I got my recipe from SmittenKitchen.com)

Figures I would get the recipe after starting my new diet plan. Perhaps with tweaking I can convert this to a yummy lower calorie treat that perhaps even my diabetic friend can enjoy! thanks!

Just wanted you to know that if these cookies are as good as the slow-cook chocolate stuff you posted a while back, I'm in big trouble. And props to Stephanie for recommending Coffee Mate French vanilla creamer to go with. Unfortunately, I live alone, so there was no one to eat it but me, myself and I. It. Was. Wonderful. Now I'll be trying the oreos. . .

Made these last night and they are devine :) And to the people worried about the calories you should go ahead and make these they are so sweet you can only eat one or two at a time :)

At last! I have long awaited this recipe. I have read about these oreo's on Stephanie's blog. I thought it was a secret recipe that was locked up, only to be revealed to a selected few! Thanks for being generous and sharing.

I made these (delicious!!) but my boys had filling all over the kitchen when they ate! Does anyone know how to harden up the filling? I froze them, but the filling was still a bit runny.

made these today, they are dangerous!!!

I tried these last night. So delicious. I think I was in sugar coma for most of the night.

I'm a huge fan of the homemade mint oreo cookies with no cream cheese (due to the lactose intolerance thing) They are super yummy!

I ended up with quite a bit of extra frosting. I think I made the cookies too big. I ended up with 30 unfrosted, and 15 once frosted and sandwiched together. Do you have a suggestion on how big to ball the dough? Thanks for sharing!

Got to try these sometime, they look good! :)

I just made these the other day and WOW...are they addicting! SO yummy! I used Pilsbury Devil's food cake mix (the kind with pudding in the mix), and my cookies didn't flatten out as much as the ones in the picture. They looked like mini whoopie pies instead -- perfect!
