a month or so ago
i was talking to two
fine ladies
azucar de la pines
and allison.
we were discussing
bowls and plates
(as fine ladies do)
and that is when allison
admitted,
"i get mine from the dollar store."
which freed me from social pressure
to keep my once-guarded secret,
"i buy mine from the dollar store too."
in fact, my favorite stuff--
glassware
plates
bowls
and flat bowls
all cost me a simple buck each.
if you are planning on
a home cooked meal
for your valentine
you might want to stop by
your local dollar store
and buy some new white plates
to serve it on.
it's the fanciest one dollar
you will ever spend.
tomorrow, what to serve on those new dollar store plates.

AHHHHHH, so refreshing to here this. Nobody ever talks about this. Thanks Cjane for this post. Oh, and also for being real! :))))
I wish I read this before my stop by IKEA to pick my son up some new cheap white dishes. Next time I am hitting the dollar store :)

OMG and my husband thought I was the loony and only women who enjoyed her Doller Store plates...silly man!
Two of my most favorite bowls in the world came from the Dollar Store. I heart them very much.
$ stores ROCK!
we got bowls from food 4 less for a mere 33 cents each. that was at least 10 years ago and they have outlasted the ones I got for my wedding from Pier One.
I'm a HUGE fan of the dollar store, but I'm always a little leery about the dishes, glasses b/c of the lead warnings on them....
It seems only natural that the best china should come from China!
I confess... I get mine at the dollar store too and Ikea, who also has great inexpensive dinnerware. So nice when you have to feed a big crowd to have a bunch of matching plates -- especially when one breaks. You know you can replace them without spending a fortune.
Great suggestion. I spot the two IKEA vases that you're using for utensils sitting behind the plates!
I get mine at Ikea... super cheap and pretty white. Now I never fret when one of the kids drops one. I just buy a new one! Oh the freedom!
Today while Son One was on his preschool field trip investigating the inner-workings of the post office, I went to the dollar store. I called my sister Mego while she waited for a plane in Orlando. I told her I was outside the dollar store where I purchased the best secrets of the dollar store. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, hand soap, dish soap, paper towels and garbage bags. Mego then told me that you posted that you buy plates at the dollar store. And I was changed. Apparently the dollar store contains more secrets besides those of household chemicals.
I love the Dollar Store for many reasons, but one of my main reasons were these perfect clear ice cream bowls I found. I bought around 12 I think (what will I do with 12...who knows, but they were only a dollar ;)
I'm scared of lead too. Ikea sounds like a great idea.
Rookie - (I love your site btw!) There are a lot of articles about toothpaste at the $ store being made in other countries that have fluoride levels that are too high or poisonous chemicals. If you go to a couponing site you can find great deals for toothpaste approved by the ADA! http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/household/toothpaste.asp
The Truth sets us Free!!! aint that the truth. I feel the need to burst that I buy ALOT of my riff-raff at the $ store. da best!
I have a secret, too. One year dh gave me our tax refund money to go buy pretty yellow plates at Pottery Barn. Bliss! Finally, after 12 or so years of married life, matching plates and bowl and mugs!! And from PB!!
turns out, the bowls chip and I now prefer the bowls we bought at target. who knew? Next time, I'm going target, all the way. or maybe ikea.
I guess you learn by doing..
I bought Lead Testers in the paint section of Home Depot and found out that the dishes I've been using for years have lead in them. So I am in need of new dishes. I like your idea, but I recommend giving them a little test before using them. Avoid Made in China for this reason. I'm sorry, but until they get their act together...
I do this too. Mugs, plates, glasses. Dollar Tree, to be exact.
Watch out for lead in cheap ceramic dishes. It leeches out when you heat the plate up, cut on etc... really you should only use them as decor or to serve dry foods on.
