on our first valentine's day together
i tried a new recipe
--crockpot cake--
a fudgy chocolate cake
slowly cooked to desire.
as it baked in the kitchen of my condo
chup was down decorating my car
with all sorts of funny valentines.
(sometimes i miss dating.)
we had lunch and lounged around
then ate the cake.
it was so very good
thick, warm, and really chocolatey.
it's been a tradition ever since.
i've posted the recipe before
but never on this blog,
so here it goes:
1 package chocolate cake mix
1 container of sour cream (8 oz)
1 cup chocolate morsels
1 cup water
4 eggs
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1 package instant chocolate pudding mix
spray crock pot with nonstick cooking spray.
mix cake mix, sour cream, chocolate morsels, water, egss, oil
and pudding mix in a bowl by hand.
pour into crock pot.
cover and cook on low 6-8 hours or high 3-4 hours.
i know some bake this cake more conventionally
but i like the smell of cake
in my kitchen for an afternoon
(by the time it is done cooking
my salivary glands are begging for taste.)
i also like how easy it is to bake
and how fun it is to scoop it out of the pot.
also:
this time i substituted chocolate chips
with chocolate truffles--
it just keeps getting better . . .
(as does the relationship.)
(wink.)

wow! i have never heard of crockpot cake! it looks yummmmmmmy! i dont know if it is common in england but i can see myself and my freinds having a lot of fun making it!
I've tried this cake recipe of your's before and it is VERY yummy!
cJane... I am so excited - see my parents (SLC), sister (Logan), & brother (Sandy) - all live in UT as we've talked about... well my birthday just happens to be on Valentines day and I just don't get to see them... SO I will try this recipe with my dear hubby and have my family try it as well. Something to share far away that sounds delicious! And I will get to share with them a part of my birthday - even though Mom's "best Valentine's Gift EVER" won't be there with her!! SO THANK YOU for sharing the love Courtney!!!! =) ~~Kymmie on west coast of FL www.marrinersmusings.blogspot.com
OK.... I'm going to try this recipe again. The first time I made it it burnt to a solid, acrid mess on the bottom of my crock pot. I don't know, maybe mine is Turbo charged & I hit the "burn it" mode by mistake. Any words of wisdom to prevent this from happening again?
mmmm i will try this - and i love the picture. and i know what you mean about missing dating -- when they were trying to woo you so intently that you felt like a queen! not that it stops... but it's just not quite the same because they've already snagged you!
The hubby doesn't like chocolate....might have to try this with another type of cake and morsels! Ah the possibilities are endless! thanks for sharing
I love the crockpot cake! I've been making it ever since the first time I saw it on your blog. My husband (not a cake guy) actually requests this one.
The instant pudding...small or large package???
oooooh, thank you so much for the recipe! I'm a new reader to your blog, and I look forward to it every day.
Sounds divine! I would love to make this. Sadly my husband doesn't like chocolate cake :( Guess I'll just have to make it to share with my little boys :D
This looks incredible. What size of pudding box do you use??? THanks!!
I know Stephanie makes this cake too--but I thought her's called for coffeemate creamer. Are they two different recipes? Or does she just like to douse hers in the cream at the end?
I use the big box of pudding. Why not?
This recipe totally works with many flavors.
Brit, when I originally made this for my family I poured vanillia coffee mate all over it. So that is how that whole idea started, but it doesn't actually call for coffee mate. That was me getting crazy. You know, wild.
I like that you said "morsels".
It feels good to say, must be even better to taste!
morsels
Do you use semisweet or milk chocolate morsels?
i've been looking for this kind of recipe for v-day. using it. you rule.
My husband is having surgery on Friday (a coral issue that has been growing in his foot for too many years now and still trying to save his foot.) I think I will bake this on Sunday and when I bring him home he will come into our home smelling like a bakery--he will like this. I hope I get to bring him home on Sunday.
I love the thought of it baking in the crockpot all day. Yum.

I can't think of anything more awesome to make for my husband for this horrible holiday---it is both low-key and delicious; just like we like it around here.
Thanks for posting!
p.s. I'm going to substitute the vegetable oil for coconut oil. Do I have your blessing?
I saw this on your other blog what seems like years ago and wanted to try it. So I went back to find it, and for the life of me...I couldn't. i searched for a good hour! So from a chocolate loving fool from West Jordan Utah, Thank you thank you thank you!

mmmmmmmmm i must try this. sounds like a delight.
Delurking just to say that cake makes me want to run out and buy a crockpot. Sooo good.
Also I read the title several times as "CRACKPOT CAKE".
Seriously.
What are chocolate morsels? I don't think we have those here in England (surprise, surprise!). Can you think of anything I could substitute? I must try this. I mean every gal needs a bit of chocolate right?
This cake is AMAZING!! I just made it, and my boyfriend and I loved it!! Thank you for this wonderful recipe!
Made this yesterday and it was definitely amazing. My bf and I thoroughly enjoyed every little (ok...big) bite! Thanks so much for sharing the recipe!
I know have a firm testimony of this cake. Thank you Cjane. Amen.
@notesfromthefrugaltrenches:
