. . . betsy's bows to stay on her head?

my sister lucy's baby betsy
always has a bow in her hair
which consistanly matches her little outfit
(even if it is pajamas)
isn't that simply adorable?

we've been asked how lucy gets those bows to stick
and here is her answer:
k y jelly.

mmmm yep.

she puts a dab of jelly on the back of the bow
spreads it around,
blows on it briefly
sticks it on betsy's head
and blows on it again
until it sticks.

pretty simple right?

(please bless i never have to blog about k y jelly again.)

i have a friend who uses elmer's school glue. non toxic, washable, and easier to talk about with mixed company. but then you have to admit to putting glue on your childs head.

A dab of Caro Syrup will do the trick too!!

corn syrup does the same thing...but now we know how betsy got here ;D (wink wink)

Hilarious :)

p.s. Let's do lunch sometime soon!

My madre was a Karo syrup girl too. Six girls, all with teeny bows on our heads attached using corn syrup.

I hope that my parents didn't use their Karo syrup like KY's intended use.

And I too hope you don't have to ever blog about KY again. We much prefer Badger Balm in our house.

how does one find out that KY works well for sticking bows to heads?!

Rhiannon I was thinking the same thing ;)

It's an OLD nurse trick...Post-partum, NICU and Pediatric nurses in particular. KY is readily on hand on any nursing unit in little sterile packets. It should be noted that nurses are very good and finding 101 uses for anything and KY on a hospital floor is never used in the way it's advertised.

Love it! I have a friend that uses corn syrup.

I learned about KY Jelly for hair bows in the hospital after having my 3rd daughter. I tried everything under the sun with the first 2 (from a piece of doublestick tape to toothpaste). None were very successful so much to my dismay I usually just ended up sticking a hat of some sort on their eternally bald heads. Third girl later a nurse told me about KY. I was thrilled and immediately bought a tube. As it turned out, third time's a charm in the hair dept (she had plenty very early on so the old fashioned clip kind worked just fine) and I ended up with a tube of barely used KY Jelly in my cabinet. Seemed crazy to just throw away a perfectly-good-practically-new anything (it doesn't go bad, does it?) so I just kept it in the cupboard. That is, until my mother in law was over and happened to be looking for something. If she saw it, she didn't say (she definitely saw it). But I was mortified nonetheless. Threw it away after that.

Corn syrup is eeky and sticky and won't work if you live in humid climes. With KY, you just rub it off. That's why it's superior to corn syrup. Plus you don't want ants on your baby's head either....just in case.

The nurses in the hospital put KY on my daughter's bald head, too, so I continued to do so - it DID work great, until she got a little older and was able to reach up and somehow get the bow off! The "left-over" KY looked like she'd had a head injury... I can honestly say that I stuck her poor little head underneath every single women's public restroom faucet, washing off the "scar". :o)

I used the KY. But we usually just do a bow on Sundays. One sunday I couldn't find the KY so I used glue. All we had was blue sparkly elmers--and as luck would have it, she was wearing a blue dress--she was 18 months and uber bald!

This is the same way my mom got bows to stick in my hair 32 years ago. I was bald as could be, but the only girl after three boys those bows stayed in. The nurses at the hospital taught my mom the trick

Thanks for the laugh!

This is because of UVRMC!! I had my first baby there, and learned the KY trick.

This was way before I knew that KY was more than a medical supply (oh newlyweds are so innocent), so I was very willing to share the advice with anyone who asked. The looks! OH the LOOKS!

I used the elmers glue as mentioned by tallia. It washes out easy, and it wasn't as smeary as KY. I tried it and corn syrup too, and like the elmers the best. However, at 9 months my daughter pulled one out of her hair when she should have been napping and almost choked on it. I switched to little clips that I could remove safely at naptime/bedtime after that.

My mom used KY with my little sisters too. She learned it from the nurses in the hospital as well and usually had the little sample packs that they had used for the bows at the hospital. I used my husbands really thick hair gel to stick in my daughters bows and that worked pretty well too.

Alright, so I could never get KY to work. I tried Elmer's. Didn't work. What did I do wrong?
Congrats to your Dad and Mom and their mission calling! If you ever need a place to stay on the way there I am in KAnsas City, Missouri. :)

KY jelly is what they use to stick bows on new born baby girls heads.
I'm sure its due to the fact that they have KY jelly in abundance at the hospital. ;D

Nicole: sorry your baby choked on the bow...I'm sure with how "green" everyone is trying to be these days maybe someone has or will or could invent the first edible bow! Dissolving in your babies mouth instantly when wet! :)

Fruit chew bows-just saying!

CJ-I'd like to see those chunky highlights! I'm sure you're really "SPICY" now!

or "sessi" as my word verification states.

i used honey with my first but when the animals started licking her head i figured i'd have to then find something to cover the bald spot they were licking onto her head...way easier to just use hair glue.

Hilarious! That's all I can say, so I'll say it again. Hilarious!

I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in July 09. She had a full head of dark hair. She and I were the only patients in labor and delivery for the whole time we were there. Every time the nurses would take her from me they would bring her back with a different hair do and different bows. I think they were a little bored. I was amazed at how good the bows would stay in when one particular nurse would do her hair. She let me in on her little secret...elmers glue. It totally works and comes right out with a little warm water. Now we have moved from glued in bows to barrette's to keep her bangs out of her eyes. She's trying to grow her hair out you know.

Hah! I love your line "please bless..." I'm glad I'm not the only one who says that. And, I use KY Jelly too...for holding on bows that is. :)

I was in a roashow once and we needed to do glitter on our faces. This was pre-glitter makeup days, so our young women's leader was using this clear, jelly stuff to get the glitter to stick on our faces. I heard some of the other leaders talking about it, but didn't know what KY Jelly was, so I just let it go. And then about 3 years later I found out what KY was. I can't think of glitter the same anymore.

LAUGHING! Not only are YOU funny, but your readers are pretty funny too! I {apparantly luckily} have no scarring stories to share. Nor do I have any girls to stick bows to:(. But I enjoyed the post nonetheless...

Mix mingle - why would you be embarrassed about having KY?

If you have a kid - I bet your MIL already presumed you have sex on occasion!
It's not as if it's some kinky sex aid - it's just lubrication. I'm single and abstinent, but have to use it sometimes just to use tampons.
Or maybe you're embarrassed about tampons too!

Be the change you want to see in the world... said...

There are some feisty readers today. I say whatever works and ahahahahhahahah!!! Too funny.

Angie said...

TRS -Thank you!! I am so glad I'm not the only one who is baffled by all the embarassment over having KY in the cupboard. People have sex, sometimes they use lubricant, thats reality! Haha. I don't see what the big embarassing stink is about!

Where was this suggestion a year ago?? lol My daughter is almost 15 months and has a fit if I try to mess with her hair but I wish I had known about the KY trick when she was an infant. I have cute little bows and no way to keep them in her hair. lol

hum... I wonder if Basa Body's "Love stick" would work for bitty-baby bows? Is it interchangeable like that?

I think this is absolutely hilarious and shocking, not because it is ky jelly. I am not all offended by that, I just didn't know it had other uses. I learned something new today.
