(sugar cookies from this post)
this recipe i owe to my friend laverne bushman
who, actually as it turns out,
i owe a lot to.
we try to make these once a week
because it is a sad day
when there is no more cookies
in the cookie jar
but please note,
it is a whole day process.
currently,
we are cutting out stars
because the boy likes to say,
"star!"
and then eat one.
disclaimer!
these are hearty
strong-doughed cookies
not at all like the delicate ones
you'll have at a tea party.
they are best baked on the soft side
just slightly brown on the bottom.
laverne's sugar cookies:
1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
3 eggs (unbeaten)
2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp. baking powder
1 1/4 tsp salt
1 cup milk
7-8 cups flour
cream shortening and sugar well.
add eggs and vanilla.
add four, salt, baking powder and soda alternatively with milk.
add enough flour to make a soft dough.
chill for 3-4 hours
(don't skip the chill--makes all the difference
when you are rolling out the dough!)
roll out dough thick
cut with cookie cutter
cook at 350 for about eight minutes.
(better slightly undercooked,
than over cooked
in our opinion.)
glaze:
(as soon as it is legal
for a human to marry food
i am going to marry this glaze)
1 cup confectioners sugar
1 tablespoon light corn syrup
2 tablespoons of water
food coloring (if desired)
stir confectioners sugar, corn syrup and water together
stir in food coloring if desired
after it is stirred
i dip the cooled cookies in the glaze
sprinkle with sugar
and let them sit until firm
(an hour or so).
glaze needs to be stirred regularly
or it will get stiff.
you can also play with the glaze
use milk instead of water
or add a touch of almond extract
or vanilla.
glaze recipe came from here.
tomorrow you will see how
a balloon blower upper
saved our christmas.
is this getting random?
p.s. we have an inquiry out
to the person who picked
nie's living room paint color
and will have answer as it comes.

Thanks for finding out about the paint color. It was me, afterall, who inquired. Such a lovely color!
Oh, and by the way, you do look like a saucy minx in that pink number on your blog. Simply delightful!
yes! sugar cookies are awesome. i'm always in the lookout for new recipes
Do you really do the dough an inch thick? I know it spreads some, but is that accurate? Just wondering. They look delish!
Ditto about the inch thick, what is it really?
Yummy...
Corn syrup in the glaze? I am intrigued. Maybe intrigued enough to make the cookies. I no do sugar cookies. I feel like they are way too much effort. Lazy, I am. And I have never made a good batch before. So I just leave the work to people like yourself and the Provo Bakery.
Ooooh, that sounds good. There might be some PB sugar cookies in my future today.
Maybe you should do a guest post for me with this recipe. Next time you make these, maybe take pictures and send them to me??? We need to talk.
ooh Rookie, I would be honored.
Ok, so I check my original recipe and it doesn't say an inch thick (did I make that up? Mid air?)it just says thick.
Thanks Ladies for bringing that to my attention. I shall fix it. On the double.
You wrote both shortening and butter in the recipe. I tend to think of Crisco when it says shortening... which do you use? Thanks!
Thanks Jody (or is it Eric?) for pointing that out. Butter was a mistake, it just calls for shortening. I use Crisco too. Lovely, fatty Crisco.
No it's Jody. Darn google account has both our names. Rest assured, he never logs on. He simply walks by and rolls his lovely eyes every time he sees "cjane" or "Etsy" scrolling about.
Thanks! Crisco it is!
I would like to know why there is not a giveaway along with this post. Just seems MEAN :)

Hi C Jane. Your comment about the wall color got me thinking. Do you think Stephanie would remember what brand/etc of blue she used for her living room in AZ? I am so in love with that baby blue color, it can be romantic yet also refreshing.
Not that the green isn't lovely (it is!) but I am definitely a fan of that blue. Thanks!
I am normally a chocolate-inclined gal, but thick, slightly-undercooked sugar cookies make me *swoon*! Thanks so much for the recipe. Hope to make these for Valentine's Day with the kiddos!
This is the sugar cookie icing recipe I use (admittedly, I usually add a bit more milk to it for consistency) It's a little easier if you like to spread on several colors to one cookie. I use Wilton gel colors from Michaels to color my icing. I have some pictures on my site of Halloween cookies I did this past Halloween.
1 cup confectioners' sugar
2 teaspoons milk
2 teaspoons light corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
assorted food coloring
Directions
In a small bowl, stir together confectioners' sugar and milk until smooth. Beat in corn syrup and almond extract until icing is smooth and glossy. If icing is too thick, add more corn syrup.
Divide into separate bowls, and add food colorings to each to desired intensity. Dip cookies, or paint them with a brush.

vanessa, vanessa you clever blogger you.
thanks kels, i can't tell my current glaze about my stepping out with another glaze, but i am eager to try yours.
The corn syrup makes the icing hard so it stays nice. And a bit shiny! YUM!

I just begged for this recipe from the master Lady Bushmen(my daughter swears she live on them for a month and i never had one!)i should have known that Cjane would share it with us all.
Thanks
Have you tried it with butter?
Hey CJane - i am from Australia and am SO keen to make these babies - what on earth is shortening?? Thanks Leigh
shortening is hydrogenated oil. It's the consistency of lard or butter. It's white. Crisco is our common brand here.
