our sister in law lisa
was charged with picking out paint
for nie's new house.
when she asked me
what color i thought
my sister would like
i told her a shade
of avocado.
so she went with it
and ordered two tones,
a lighter one for the living room
and a shade darker for the kitchen.

for nie's new house.

when i asked her if she remembered
the actual name of the paint colors
lisa responded, no.
but, she gave me some good advice
to share:
pick a color you like
and go with it.
which seems pretty simplistic,
but for someone who easily
complicates paint-choosing
(does it go with everything in the house?)
(how does it make me feel at 3:30pm?)
(does it match the cat?)
(my eyes?)
i greatly appreciate this wisdom.
good luck!

Lisa is both wise and good at picking out two terrific shades of green.
I hope people keep asking about items in this photo because seeing your Mom and Betsy never fails to cheer me. Extra thanks for the photo of sweet Nicholas.

Gigs got his pants on the ground? silly boy.
You know that song, right? It's a joke.
Oh cjane, you sound like me when choosing paint colors. And what if you get a new cat and it doesn't match what you've chosen to go with the old cat? Do you get rid of the new cat or repaint. Oh, it's just too much to think about. Maybe white is the "color" of choice for me. But that's so boring........!
P.S., love the "line up" on the kitchen bar. I think you should start a movement to have Anthropologie rename those bowls "nienie" bowls. That's what I've been calling them since I read Stephanie's long ago post about them.
That top picture looks a lot like the color I painted my living room. It's from Restoration Hardware and it's called "silver sage". (I had to go to a paint store and have them match the color) I love it because sometimes it looks a little more blue, and sometimes more sage. I'd be surprised if nie's room is not a shade close to that one that I mentioned.
I LOVE the advice, too!
I love the painting over the piano! Where can I find that?
I love those two pictures too. I don't have the patience to paint my own house. But I sure am impressed with people who do. :)
The colour in the living room looks like what's in my living room - sage(y) green. A while back my husband read an article about the colour of the universe - all the colours of space combine to make....
sage green!
The most recent article I could find on Google says it's beige now, but really... beige? I prefer to keep believing that the colour on my walls are cosmically created.
And there's your random trivia for the day.
You should write a post on redoing her home. I LOVE it. I want tips. Thanks. And by the way, you are amazing, no hate should ever get you down, you are loved by many!
I just read your column about getting the hate comment. Just wanted you to know that you and your family have touched my heart so many times, and that I don't know you personally but I love you your devotion and loyalty to each other. I appreciate you writing your blogs and sharing your life experiences with the rest of us.
If you need a place to start... try Dunn Edwards/Watercress paint. It's all over my house and I love, love, love it!!! It looks really similar to Nie's paint.
What great painting advice Lisa! I am crazy about matching but really believe now that my homewears could envolve around my paint choices. Honestly I hadn't noticed the colour of Nie's walls or if this and that matched it or suited it.
She actually smashed one of my colour rules to pieces! Don't put red and green together (keep calm poster on green wall) otherwise it looks christmassy all year. Kaboom - gone! And in such chic way.
Thanks CJane for answering all the Q's we the readers have out here.

Ok... I'm not a green person and I love both rooms. But what I really want is the "Keep Calm and Carry On" print from her kitchen!
Where can I find that?
Who could hate you? You are lovely.
sfgirlbybay sells the prints from her etsy shop:

Love the color choice. Living with my brother has left me with white walls that I am dying to paint colorful and inspiring!
Living in a land of white walls... dreaming of color!
Thanks!

I painted my guest room almost the same color as the top photo (http://heylucy.typepad.com/heylucy/2008/09/learning-from-m.html). Mine is from Dunn-Edwards, and the color name is Spooky, which is one of the reasons I had to pick it (also, it is the perfect silver-y green). Plus, red and green work perfectly together since they're opposites on the color wheel. If you vary the shades from the traditional Christmas colors, they don't look Christmas-y at all.
FOR ERIN: check etsy.com - there are several sizes, colors, even cheeky variations.
The totally awesome nativity painting is by Brian Kershisnik, a fellow Provonian. (kershisnik.com)
CJane, you should do a post about his painting on this blog and the Provo blog!
To JENNIFER and CATHERINE and ERIN...

Love the paint, but what I want to know is WHERE oh where did you find the blue print for the chair?
